A group of UCLA students created an online dating site that sets users up on blind dates. Courtesy of Dmitri Brereton. The program, which currently has about total users, matches individuals and sets them up on blind dates on campus. Dmitri Brereton, a third-year computer science student and founder, product manager and a back-end developer of BruinMeet, said he thinks the program helps people connect without the stress of progressing from texting someone to meeting them in person. Users can customize their preferences from a variety of genders, races and sexualities when setting up their profiles. Chan, a third-year computer science student, said he thinks the program is safe and accessible for users because it is only open to UCLA students. Brereton said he founded Bruin Connections, which used a Google Form to match couples together, in February. Following the success of the program, he decided to relaunch the program as BruinMeet in November.

But for one who grew up in the Jewish tradition that firmly stresses the mitzvah of going forth and multiplying, the latter might be the most under-appreciated and under-stressed of the bunch. It is a back and forth game played across nights of socializing — but only if one makes time to frequent events. Elisa Gurevich, co-director of Chabad at UCLA, shares her observation that she does not see a lot of students looking for long-term mates. Gurevich says that most students pursue hook-up situations, which she and her husband, Rabbi Dovid Gurevich, try to discourage if and when they see the relationships become unhealthy.
Besides believing that the man looking for such a woman is bound to fail, Rabbi Rupp places much of the blame on society not putting enough emphasis on meaningful relationships. The couple is responsible for providing the space to bring people together, which often results in serious relationships and sometimes marriage.
Kaplan believes that the campus environment creates a natural setting for people to date informally. And you see them right there with their friends, as an authentic version of themselves. Kaplan even offers her own bridal classes, or kallah classes, for women. She draws on the lessons learned during her 13 years of marriage and skills developed while studying to become a social worker, working at a mikvah ritual bath , and being part of a Los Angeles and national network of kallah teachers.
Kaplan is a certified kallah teacher, both on paper and in her attitude toward her students. She meets with brides-to-be either one-on-one or in small groups, in order to answer questions that they have, and to prepare them for life as married women. But a third party who has no agenda, who has experience with other couples, is an invaluable resource. Kaplan compares her kallah classes to the orientation weekend at the beginning of freshman year.

Chris McKinlay was folded into a cramped fifth-floor cubicle in UCLA’s math sciences building, lit by a single bulb and the glow from his monitor. The subject: large-scale data processing and parallel numerical methods. While the computer chugged, he clicked open a second window to check his OkCupid inbox. McKinlay, a lanky year-old with tousled hair, was one of about 40 million Americans looking for romance through websites like Match.
He’d sent dozens of cutesy introductory messages to women touted as potential matches by OkCupid’s algorithms. Most were ignored; he’d gone on a total of six first dates. On that early morning in June , his compiler crunching out machine code in one window, his forlorn dating profile sitting idle in the other, it dawned on him that he was doing it wrong. He’d been approaching online matchmaking like any other user. Instead, he realized, he should be dating like a mathematician. OkCupid was founded by Harvard math majors in , and it first caught daters’ attention because of its computational approach to matchmaking.
Members answer droves of multiple-choice survey questions on everything from politics, religion, and family to love, sex, and smartphones. The closer to percent—mathematical soul mate—the better. But mathematically, McKinlay’s compatibility with women in Los Angeles was abysmal. OkCupid’s algorithms use only the questions that both potential matches decide to answer, and the match questions McKinlay had chosen—more or less at random—had proven unpopular.

While individual conferences decide whether to play fall sports amid the COVID pandemic , often with football at the forefront, those disparate decisions have already had major NCAA tournament implications for all fall Olympic sports. In deciding to suspend all sports through , the Pac had hopes to move competitions to spring. Now the conference that prides itself on Olympic sport success must wait to see if the championship tournaments will follow. There could be smaller bracket sizes.
The coach who led the Bruins to three national championships in four years hopes that the NCAA, the schools and the conferences can combine for a creative solution to pull at least one bright spot out of an otherwise dark year. There are seniors on track to graduate early who now must search for minors or graduate programs to remain eligible for a delayed spring season. There are soccer players who hoped to start their professional careers.
Spring sports teams went through a similar litany of problems when their seasons were suddenly canceled in March. The Pac cited recent findings that linked the novel coronavirus to myocarditis, a heart condition that results in inflammation of the heart muscle, as a reason to pause fall sports. Research about the novel virus and its long-term effects is still developing, but risks of the unknown were too much to push aside, even as athletes dedicated themselves to a return by getting their temperatures taken every day, filling out surveys and wearing a mask during voluntary workouts.
The mix of emotions also contained some hope. The fall season was already going to be delayed and condensed with no nonconference matches, coaches reasoned.
